On Thursday, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was the site of a remarkable exhibition of national pride and naval strength, with the arrival of China’s first domestically constructed aircraft carrier, the CNS Shandong. Accompanied by a strong escort fleet, the carrier's entry was celebrated with a ceremonial water salute and enthusiastic cheers from a large crowd, underscoring the deep patriotic feelings among the local residents.
the Yan'an, a Type 055 missile destroyer; the Zhanjiang, a Type 052D missile destroyer; and the Yuncheng, a Type 054A missile frigate. As the fleet navigated Victoria Harbour around 8 am, large crowds gathered along the waterfront to witness the event, which displayed 12 carrier-based aircraft and featured a formation of 700 sailors arranging themselves to form the characters Guo An Jia Hao, meaning “secure country, sweet home.”
This milestone marks Hong Kong's distinction as the only city in the world to have hosted two active Chinese aircraft carriers, following the previous visit of the Liaoning in 2017. The Shandong’s visit also coincided with the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, as well as the fifth anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's National Security Law, highlighting the country's military advancements and commemorating the long-standing presence of the People’s Liberation Army in the region.
At a welcoming event held at Ngong Shuen Chau Barracks, Hong Kong's Chief Executive, John Lee Ka-chiu, described the event's timing as "inspiring." He noted that the Shandong, which has been in service since 2019, symbolizes the country's rapid progress in defense technology and maritime capabilities. Additionally, he pointed out that the visit serves as a reminder of the resilience demonstrated during wartime and the prosperity and stability achieved today, particularly as it precedes the celebration of the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in the war against Japanese aggression.
The fleet's visit will last for five days and follows the July 1 celebrations marking the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong's return in 1997. Residents were excitedly sharing tips on social media for viewing the fleet, which sailed through the picturesque East Lamma Channel before docking. Furthermore, the PLA Hong Kong Garrison has offered 10,000 free tickets for tours of the Shandong and the escort ships, promoting an opportunity for the public to learn about national defense and foster a sense of patriotic identity.

Another aircraft carrier. Meanwhile, the real issues facing Hong Kong are ignored.

Resilience during wartime? What about the resilience of the people facing increasing restrictions?

The 'sweet home' phrase feels hollow considering the crackdown on freedoms.

So much for the promise of 'One Country, Two Systems'. This is clearly a consolidation of power.

This 'celebration' is just a constant reminder of the loss of freedoms Hong Kong citizens suffered.
