On Wednesday, a fireworks show at the New Seabury Country Club in Mashpee, Cape Cod, took a dangerous turn when a firework shell ignited early, resulting in a significant explosion that left four crew members of the fireworks company Pyrotecnico injured. The display was scheduled to occur later in the evening at 9 p.m., but the explosive incident, which happened around 4:30 p.m., sent shockwaves and smoke visible from miles away.
Among the injured, one individual suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was subsequently airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital. Another crew member experienced minor injuries and was transported to Falmouth Hospital for treatment, while six others were examined at the scene, with two receiving on-site care and the remainder opting out of further medical attention.
In light of the accident, Jim Clay, the general manager of New Seabury Country Club, informed members that the fireworks portion of the evening's event had to be canceled, although other activities such as a barbecue and kids' entertainment would continue. He expressed the club's concern for the well-being of those injured and prioritized safety during the incident.
Pyrotecnico confirmed that the explosion originated from one of the fireworks shells that ignited prematurely while the crew was preparing for the show. Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services is investigating the situation, suggesting that the incident appears to have been accidental. Eyewitnesses reported the chaos, with one man recalling how workers fled the scene amidst the eruption, while another described the sequence of explosions as alarming and distressing for those involved.

Four crew members injured? That’s unacceptable! They should consider canceling all future shows.

Fireworks are too dangerous! Why do we still allow them? This could have been much worse!

Heartbreaking to hear about these injuries. We need stricter regulations on fireworks displays!

It’s hard to believe that this is a 'freak accident.' Poor safety standards seem more likely.

I think the club should stick to barbecues and skip the dangerous pyrotechnics next time!
