On Thursday, a troubling incident unfolded on a long-distance train in southern Germany where a man wielded an axe, injuring four passengers before being arrested. The attack took place on an ICE train traveling to Vienna, particularly when the train was en route between the towns of Straubing and Plattling, with around 500 individuals onboard at the time.
Authorities reported that around 150 emergency personnel, including police officers and firefighters, rushed to the scene following the assault. The railway line was subsequently shut down. Details regarding the attacker, including his identity and motives, remain unclear, though it was disclosed that he was overpowered by fellow passengers and sustained injuries himself.
Further information from the police indicated that in addition to the axe, the assailant might have utilized other weapons during the attack. A spokesperson confirmed that the suspected attacker was receiving medical attention and was in police custody. The injured passengers were promptly transported to local hospitals.
Emergency services were alerted around 2 PM local time when passengers engaged the emergency brakes, leading the train to halt near the village of Straßkirchen. To ensure the well-being of all affected, the Bavarian Red Cross established a care center nearby and deployed psychological support for those who might have suffered emotional trauma despite not being physically harmed. German railway operator Deutsche Bahn extended its sympathies to the victims while expressing gratitude for the swift response from emergency teams.
This incident is part of a concerning trend of violent occurrences in public areas across Germany in recent months, including a stabbing spree in Hamburg and a fatal driving incident at a demonstration in Munich.

Honestly, I’m horrified. Each incident chips away at the sense of safety we used to feel in public spaces.
