Migrant Shelters Close as Border Apprehensions Decline

Migrant shelters across the United States are experiencing closures as the situation at the border has changed significantly. Several shelters have shut down in various states, reflecting a decrease in the number of migrants.

In Arizona, two shelters in Pima County closed in January. In California, the Jewish Family Service in San Diego closed its shelter in February, citing policy changes as a contributing factor. Texas saw the closure of the San Antonio-based Migrant Resource Center in February, attributed to a decline in border crossings.

On the East Coast, New York City has closed numerous migrant shelters this year. Massachusetts has also seen a significant reduction in shelters, with many closing recently.

The White House has stated that the decrease in migrant shelter operations is a result of changes in border security measures. They also highlighted the closure of processing facilities along the border.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed that temporary processing facilities have been shut down due to the reduced number of apprehensions. Resources previously allocated to these facilities are being redirected to other priorities.

Reports from Mexico also indicate a drop in the number of people attempting to enter the U.S. illegally. Recent border statistics show significantly lower numbers compared to previous periods.

The House is currently considering a bill that includes substantial funding for border security and immigration initiatives. This bill allocates billions towards Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to increase deportation efforts, expand detention capacity, and fund further border wall construction.

The White House has stated that the passage of this bill will solidify the progress made in border security and lead to a large-scale deportation campaign. However, not everyone supports these measures.
