Phone Call Between Putin and Trump Discusses Ukraine Conflict and Middle East Matters

The sixth phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump lasted nearly an hour and was focused primarily on finding a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. The Kremlin reported that Putin emphasized Russia's commitment to seeking a diplomatic solution while also addressing the underlying issues of the conflict.

Trump urged Putin to bring an end to hostilities without delay. According to Yury Ushakov, a presidential aide, the leaders also reviewed a range of topics beyond Ukraine, such as the escalating situation between Israel and Iran, the circumstances in Syria, and broader Middle Eastern affairs.

This call followed closely on the heels of Putin's first direct discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron in almost three years. Since Trump returned to the presidency in January, he and Putin have engaged in at least five conversations that addressed various subjects, including negotiations to end the Ukraine conflict and efforts to restore deteriorated relations that were strained during Joe Biden's presidency.

During their previous discussion on June 14, the leaders talked about Israel's military actions regarding Iran’s nuclear facilities. The agenda for this latest call also included the identification of "promising" collaborative projects in energy and space exploration. Putin took the opportunity to wish Trump a happy Independence Day, recalling historical ties stemming from Russia's refusal to support British forces during the American Revolution.

The conversation, described by Moscow as “business-like,” lasted approximately an hour, and the two leaders agreed to maintain ongoing communication. Ushakov noted that further calls could be organized on short notice, indicating a willingness to continue dialogue.
