A man, aged 37, was urgently taken to the hospital after a severe head injury occurred during a battle re-enactment at Bodiam Castle in East Sussex. This incident took place around 3 PM on Sunday, and although he was equipped with body armor, the sword of his opponent managed to penetrate the visor. Currently, the man remains in critical condition, prompting police investigations into the event.
Authorities are calling for anyone who might have seen the incident or have photographs or videos to come forward, as they aim to piece together the details of the accident. Detective Inspector Barry Chandler remarked on the seriousness of the situation, indicating that the incident is being treated as an accident. The opponent involved, aged 36 and also from Horsham, is cooperating with police inquiries along with the event's organizers.
Witnesses reported that the reenactment was initially exhilarating, but the atmosphere changed drastically when the accident occurred. One bystander described it as a freak incident, noting that the fighters had likely rehearsed their performance numerous times and that it was unfortunate luck that led to the injury. The event left many attendees, including children, visibly upset, with reports of some kids being in tears.
The National Trust, which organizes these types of historical reenactments at Bodiam Castle, expressed their concern for the injured man and his family. A spokesperson highlighted the organization’s commitment to safety and stated that they are fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation while refraining from additional comments as it remains a legal matter.

Exhilarating" before the accident? Maybe the actors were being too aggressive.
