Vladimir Putin has encountered a severe challenge as more than 20,000 military personnel have deserted their posts in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, further weakening Russian forces. Data from Mediazone, a Russian independent news service, reveals that from the start of the invasion in February 2022, courts have documented 20,538 cases related to desertion, absence without leave, or refusal to follow orders, with the bulk being attributed to soldiers going awol.
Out of the desertion cases, 17,721 individuals are facing prosecution under Russia's Criminal Code, where they could face up to 10 years in prison. Nevertheless, those convicted may have the option to reduce their sentences by serving in Storm-Z convict assault units, illustrating the desperate measures being taken to replenish the ranks. The UK’s Defence Intelligence has observed that these developments significantly contrast the Kremlin’s narrative that values military service amid what is considered an illegal war in Ukraine.
In addition to personnel losses, Russia's military has sustained extensive damage in terms of equipment as well. Reports indicate that approximately 10,980 tanks, 22,922 armored fighting vehicles, and nearly 54,000 various vehicles and fuel tanks have been lost. Furthermore, the losses extend to 1,427 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,190 air defense systems, and significant losses in aircraft and naval assets, including 420 airplanes, 340 helicopters, 28 ships, and one submarine. Earlier assessments from Defence Intelligence have suggested that the army's capability to conduct complex operations has been severely diminished due to these substantial losses, raising questions about the effectiveness of its military strategy in the conflict.

Desertion figures can be exaggerated, especially by independent news sources. Don’t buy into the hype!

This reinforces the idea that Putin’s war is losing support not just globally but from his own soldiers.

This narrative is fueled by anti-Russian sentiment. There are always risks in war; we shouldn’t sensationalize desertion.

This shed light on the human cost of the war. It's time we start listening to the voices of these soldiers.

The extensive equipment loss is indicative of the failed strategy. Russia cannot sustain such heavy losses.

Military desertions happen in every war. Why focus solely on Russia? This is a biased narrative.

This article is a wake-up call. The extent of losses shows how misguided the invasion really was.
