King Charles Shifts Focus to Sustainability and Fiscal Responsibility

The King is set to retire the royal train in 2027 after many years of service. King Charles and other members of the Royal Family will instead use two new helicopters. The train, first built for Queen Victoria in the mid-19th century, has been a significant part of royal life, including transporting the coffins of several monarchs for burial.

James Chalmers, Keeper of the Privy Purse, stated that the decision reflects the royal household's commitment to "fiscal discipline" and "value for money." He explained that the decommissioning process will begin next year, with the King's support.

King Charles previously considered making the royal train more environmentally friendly. In 2007, he reportedly sought to have the train run on used cooking oil, though he acknowledged potential maintenance challenges. The annual accounts also revealed that the Sovereign Grant will remain at £86.3 million, while royal travel expenses increased. This report covers the period following the King and Princess of Wales's cancer diagnoses.

Mr. Chalmers noted the King's resilience in resuming public duties while undergoing treatment, highlighting the adaptability of the royal household. The Duchy of Cornwall also released its Annual Report. The Prince of Wales is focused on significant changes as the Duke of Cornwall. This role provides him with a private income and has initiated a policy review of rents from charities and community groups.

The Duchy of Cornwall encompasses a large area across multiple counties and has outlined its key priorities. These include achieving Net Zero emissions by 2032, addressing housing and homelessness, and supporting mental health organizations. The Duchy has invested in community development projects, including housing initiatives, and environmental programs. Will Bax, the Duchy's new secretary, stated that the Prince of Wales aims to operate the Duchy in a "modern, socially minded way.

The royal family needs to be seen as modern and practical. This is a step in the right direction.
