A vehicle fire caused a complete closure of the M62 during the morning rush hour. The incident occurred on the westbound carriageway, between Junction 23 (A640 New Hey Road, Huddersfield) and Junction 22 (A672, Rishworth Moor). Emergency services were on the scene. National Highways initially estimated the closure would remain in place until 9:30 am.
A diversion route was put in place for drivers. From Junction 24, motorists were advised to follow the solid square symbol, taking the A629 north, then the A646 and A58 west through Sowerby Bridge, and finally the A672 south from Ripponden to rejoin the M62 at Junction 22.
National Highways reported that the closure was due to a lorry fire, with recovery of the vehicle's load (foodstuffs) ongoing. Delays of approximately 60 minutes were expected, with congestion stretching back five miles, almost to Junction 26 (Bradford South). All traffic caught within the closure had been released.
Traffic monitoring services reported severe delays due to the vehicle fire. The road was closed around 6:55 am. Congestion extended to Junction 25 (Brighouse). Traffic was also slowing on the opposite side of the carriageway due to onlookers.
Smoke from the fire was visible over a wide area. Traffic was also slow on the eastbound carriageway as drivers slowed to view the incident. Delays of around an hour were reported on the approach to Junction 24.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to the scene at 6:35 am. Three crews extinguished the fire using hose reels and breathing apparatus. There were no reported injuries.
Drivers were advised to allow extra time for their journeys and consider alternative routes. National Highways Traffic Officers were also on the scene to assist with traffic management.

They should have better ways to deal with incidents quickly. This is a failure.

Can't believe drivers on the other side are rubbernecking and slowing down... Makes it even worse!

Important information. Much better than being stuck in the dark.

Appreciate the heads-up about delays. Will leave earlier tomorrow.
