A heatwave continues to grip Europe, with temperatures soaring to extreme levels. Southern Spain experienced particularly intense heat over the weekend, with thermometers reaching 46C in some areas. Seville and surrounding regions also saw temperatures in the mid-40Cs. This extreme heat has set new records in certain locations, according to the national weather service.
The scorching weather is not limited to Spain. Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe are also enduring intense heat. Several countries have issued weather alerts due to the extreme conditions, as authorities express growing concern about the health impacts.
Red heat warnings are in effect in parts of Portugal, Italy, and Croatia. Numerous amber alerts have been issued across several other European nations. Tragically, there have already been reported deaths related to the heat. In Spain, a woman died after working as a road sweeper, and a Dutch tourist died from heatstroke while hiking in Majorca.
Emergency services responded to the hiker's collapse, but were unable to save him. In response to the heat, Italy has established dedicated heatstroke units in hospitals to expedite treatment. Bologna has set up climate shelters with air conditioning and water, while Rome is offering free access to swimming pools for the elderly, who are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, as are pregnant women.
