A Ukrainian fighter pilot, Lieutenant Colonel Maksym Ustymenko, has been posthumously awarded the country’s highest honor after his death during a large-scale Russian attack. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that he died a hero, having successfully downed multiple Russian targets. He was piloting an F-16 and was involved in intercepting a barrage of hundreds of Russian drones and missiles.
According to the Air Force, Lt. Col. Ustymenko utilized all of his onboard weaponry, successfully shooting down seven aerial targets. During the final engagement, his aircraft sustained damage and began to lose altitude. The Air Force stated that he did everything possible, maneuvering the US-made aircraft away from a populated area, but did not have time to eject.
President Volodymyr Zelensky conferred the title of Hero of Ukraine upon Lt. Col. Ustymenko, who was born in 1993. The President announced the honor during his nightly address, describing Lt. Col. Ustymenko as one of Ukraine's finest. He highlighted the pilot's significant contributions to the country, noting his years of service on the front lines.
The recent conflict has resulted in the loss of three F-16s. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 477 drones and decoys, along with 60 missiles, across Ukraine overnight on Saturday. Of these, 249 were shot down, and 226 were lost, likely due to electronic jamming. Yuriy Ihnat, head of communications for Ukraine’s air force, characterized the attack as the most extensive airstrike since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022. The attack targeted multiple regions, including areas in western Ukraine, far from the front lines.
Poland and allied nations scrambled aircraft to ensure the security of Polish airspace. Officials reported casualties in several regions. Three people were killed in drone strikes in the Kherson, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. An additional fatality was reported in Kostyantynivka due to an airstrike, while a man died in shelling in Kherson. The body of a 70-year-old woman was discovered under the rubble of a nine-story building in the Zaporizhzhia region, also hit by Russian shelling.
