German authorities are currently investigating a series of sexual assaults that occurred at an outdoor swimming pool. The incidents involved at least nine young girls. The attacks took place at the Barbarossabad swimming pool in Gelnhausen, Hesse, on a Sunday. The victims, aged between 11 and 17, reported being touched inappropriately.
Following the alleged assaults, several of the girls informed pool staff around 5 pm. They claimed they had been touched by a group of men in the whirlpool area of the swimming baths. Police have arrested four suspects, all Syrian nationals, aged between 18 and 28 years old. Criminal charges have been filed against the men, and they have been banned from the pool.
A spokeswoman from the Southeast Hesse Police Headquarters in Offenbach confirmed the nationalities of the arrested men. Initially, five schoolgirls reported the sexual assaults. However, after the reports became public, more girls came forward to the police. Authorities have stated that the number of victims has risen to nine.
In related news, German lawmakers recently voted to suspend family reunions for many migrants. This decision is part of a new conservative-led government's initiative to adopt a stricter approach to migration. The lower house of parliament voted to suspend family reunions for two years for migrants with "subsidiary protection," a status that is less than asylum.
This status was held by over 388,000 people in Germany at the end of March, including many fleeing the Syrian civil war. The new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, made a tougher migration policy a key part of his election campaign. Shortly after taking office, the government increased police presence at the border and announced that some asylum-seekers would be turned away. The bill passed is the first migration legislation since Merz took office. It suspends rules from 2018 that allowed up to 1,000 close relatives per month to join migrants with limited protection.

It's important to emphasize that the actions of a few do not represent an entire community.

No one should feel unsafe at a public swimming pool; we need more protective measures.
