A member of the Northern Irish rap group Kneecap known as Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, or Mo Chara, has escaped prosecution after making incendiary remarks at a gig in London. He had been recorded shouting "the only good Tory is a dead Tory" and encouraging fans to "kill your local MP" during a show in November 2023, but the Metropolitan Police concluded that the time lapsed was too long for legal action to be taken against him.
The police released a statement explaining that they had conducted a thorough inquiry into the incident and considered various potential offences. However, they stated that since the footage only came to their attention months later, any charges that could have been pursued were now beyond the statutory time limit for prosecution. Despite this development, Ó hAnnaidh faces a different investigation regarding alleged support for a terrorist organization, specifically linked to an incident where he displayed a Hezbollah flag and showed support for Hamas during another event in November.
This news follows recent controversies surrounding Kneecap's politically charged performances, especially at the Glastonbury Festival where fellow artists made provocative statements. Katie Amess, the daughter of a murdered MP, criticized the rapper for his remarks, cautioning about their impact on impressionable individuals. In light of the backlash, Kneecap has publicly apologized to the Amess and Cox families, claiming their remarks were misrepresented and they do not advocate violence against anyone, including MPs. Nonetheless, the band's politically motivated shows have continued to stir debate and even garnered attention from US authorities regarding their upcoming tour.

Kill your MP" is clearly hyperbole. Get a grip, people!

This is exactly the reaction they wanted. The band is just trying to provoke a reaction and they're succeeding.

It's free speech, learn to handle it. Let's not get so sensitive.
