Russian Catamaran Explosion in the Sea of Japan Prompts Criminal Investigation

In a shocking incident in the Sea of Japan, a Russian catamaran erupted into flames after a fire broke out while it was conducting tourist excursions close to Vladivostok. Eyewitness footage captured by rescuers dramatically reveals the moment of the explosion, showcasing a massive fireball erupting from the boat, accompanied by a thick plume of black smoke. Reports indicate that there were twelve individuals aboard the catamaran, known as the Merlion, which is operated by the company Korsar.

Fortunately, a nearby vessel managed to evacuate all tourists just in time, allowing them to escape before the devastating explosion tore through the catamaran. The Merlion, which was constructed in 2021 and is capable of accommodating up to 30 people, was equipped with amenities such as a barbecue and a small motorboat. However, the shipbuilding company responsible for its construction disclosed that the catamaran was never intended for tourist services. Sergei Voloshchenko, the Chief Designer at the Composite Shipbuilding shipyard, emphasized to local media that the vessel was originally built for a private client and had been resold to Korsar, which allegedly obtained its operating license unlawfully. This raises significant concerns, as the vessel's gasoline engines are prohibited by safety regulations pertaining to maritime transportation.

Despite the miraculous rescue, the situation has prompted serious discourse, with claims of negligence leveled against authorities. A representative of another tour operator with a similar catamaran remarked on the occurrence, dismissing it as a common hazard, while also noting that the rescue effort was commendable. In light of the explosion, authorities have initiated a criminal investigation focusing on the breach of traffic safety protocols and improper operation of marine transport. Vladivostok, located on the Pacific coast of Russia, serves as a key port city and base for the Russian Pacific Fleet, which is currently facing challenges related to military efforts in Ukraine.

Let’s hope this incident ensures stricter enforcement of safety regulations for all vessels.

At least everyone got out safely. The focus now should be on preventing this in the future.

Thank goodness for the quick-thinking nearby vessel that rescued everyone. That was a close call!

It seems profit comes before safety in the tourism industry. This is unacceptable!
