Following the tragic death of a seven-year-old girl in a Southend park yesterday, residents are seeking answers. The incident, in which a falling tree crushed the child, has prompted questions directed at Southend-on-Sea City Council (SCC). Locals have expressed concerns, noting the presence of benches installed beneath the tree and the use of poles to prop it up.
Social media users have voiced their opinions on the matter. One individual suggested the tree should have been removed rather than supported, while another criticized the decision to use a pole to hold up a branch, calling it negligence. A local resident, who walks through the park daily, stated the tree had been propped up for as long as they could remember, and that the boughs were very large. Another person wrote that the tree was clearly too big to support itself, and that someone's family is now suffering the consequences.
Witnesses to the event described the scene. A member of a cricket club, who was present at the time, mentioned the tree appeared to be "preserved" with metal poles. They were among those who helped lift the tree off the trapped children. People in the area reported hearing a loud noise, followed by a woman's distress.
In response to the tragedy, online comments have called for the council or park owners to cover funeral costs and compensate the families involved. The council has stated that they are investigating the incident and will not comment further at this time. The council leader expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased child, as well as to the injured children and those who were present. The council leader also encouraged those affected to seek support. The Chief Constable also expressed condolences and provided updates on the investigation.

The council leader offered condolences, and I think we should focus on offering support to the family.

The park management knew that tree was a hazard and did nothing. Justice for this little girl.

They should be covering every single cost of the funeral. The least they can do.

My heart breaks for that family. The council needs to be held accountable for this disaster.

That council leader's condolences feel hollow. They should be answering questions, not just offering platitudes.
