Egypt is widely regarded as an enticing travel destination for those seeking a holiday filled with luxury and adventure. However, beyond the glamorous facade of popular resorts such as Sharm el Sheikh, a more sinister reality exists for some travelers.

Recent incidents have exposed a troubling side of Egyptian tourism, where holidaymakers have found themselves victims of arbitrary arrests and unexplained disappearances. A concerning case involved Ivonne Daniela Latorre, who vanished during the Zamna music festival held near the Giza Pyramids in April. Unfortunately, she was later discovered in a coma and died shortly after, shedding light on the potential dangers that tourists may face. Preceding her disappearance, Latorre and her friend were lured to an after-party by men who falsely presented themselves as producers looking to help them achieve fame.

Moreover, the case of British businessman Tony Camoccio illustrates the harsh realities of the local justice system. After a harmless gesture of patting a security guard on the back, Camoccio found himself facing sexual assault charges and the prospect of seven years in prison. Misled into signing a confession written in Arabic, he felt compelled to bribe the policeman to avoid prosecution. As he recounted his harrowing experience of being locked up for two nights, he described the terror of hearing the suffering of other detainees. Expressing his disillusionment with the country, Camoccio warned prospective travelers, saying that many tourists remain unaware of the risks while they confine themselves to the safety of their hotels.
