Autonomous Train Successfully Completes Test Run in Tokyo

In Kokubunji, Tokyo, a revolutionary test took place with a driverless train that showcased an autonomous control system capable of navigating the tracks without human intervention. During the demonstration, an immobile mannequin was placed on the tracks to simulate an obstacle, prompting the train to execute an emergency stop. Once the mannequin was cleared, the system automatically evaluated the safety of the environment and resumed operation without any additional input from a driver.

This pilotless train, equipped with cutting-edge monitoring technology including a camera and nine sensors at the front, was tested along an experimental railway line managed by the Railway Technical Research Institute. The autonomous system controlled not just the train's movement, but also the crossing gates and railroad switches during the trial run. The initiative to develop this technology is aimed at facilitating driverless train operations in a bid to save on workforce expenses for local railways, a transition that is seen as increasingly important in the industry.
