Yuri, the imperial family's dog, was a frequent companion on their private getaways. A photograph taken in Nasu, Tochigi Prefecture, in August 2019, shows her with them.
The beloved pet of the imperial family, Yuri, passed away on June 23rd due to old age, according to the family's aides. She was sixteen years old.
The family is deeply saddened by her passing, particularly Princess Aiko, who grew up with Yuri. Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako adopted the mixed-breed dog in 2009 through a veterinary clinic, before the Emperor ascended the throne. Their daughter, Aiko, was seven years old at the time and gave her the name Yuri.
Yuri was considered a cherished member of the family, residing at the imperial residence in Tokyo. She often accompanied the family on their private retreats. During Princess Aiko's challenging early years in elementary school, Yuri would even accompany her on her morning commute, offering support and encouragement.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Yuri also played a special role in animal-assisted therapy, visiting hospitals in Tokyo. She brought comfort and joy to young patients, including those in pediatric wards. In her final years, Yuri spent more time resting peacefully at home. She passed away peacefully on the evening of June 23rd, surrounded by the imperial family.
The family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to all those who supported and loved Yuri throughout her long life.
