Adriana Smith's funeral took place on Saturday at Fairfield Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia, according to a report by NBC affiliate WXIA. The service saw a large turnout, featuring numerous attendees including her fellow nurses and community members who gathered to pay their respects.
Smith, who celebrated her 31st birthday in June, was declared brain-dead earlier this year after doctors discovered several blood clots in her brain during a CT scan. According to her mother, April Newkirk, Smith was nine weeks pregnant when her boyfriend found her in distress and rushed her to the hospital.
Due to Georgia's stringent abortion laws, specifically the LIFE Act prohibiting abortions after six weeks, Smith remained on life support until her baby could be delivered safely. The infant, named Chance, was born on June 13, weighing just 1 pound and 13 ounces, and is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit, yet his mother was taken off life support days later.
The funeral service honored Smith through a tribute by the Atlanta Metropolitan Nursing Honor Guard, recognizing her commitment as a nurse, while attendees carried white roses in memory of her. Her younger sister, Naya, expressed gratitude for Smith's teachings of love and kindness, emphasizing the strong importance of family in her sister's life and her hope to emulate her values.
