In the opening Under-19 one-day international, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi of India delivered an exciting performance, though he fell just short of a half-century. His aggressive batting allowed the visiting team to successfully pursue England's score in a swift 24 overs.
India was set a target of 175 runs for victory. Suryavanshi, opening the batting, made an immediate impact. He scored 48 runs off only 19 balls, propelling India towards a comfortable six-wicket win and a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series.
England had struggled to reach 174 runs, lasting 42.2 overs. Rocky Flintoff, son of the renowned Andrew Flintoff, contributed a patient 56 runs from 90 balls. However, Flintoff's steady innings was quickly overshadowed by Suryavanshi's explosive batting display.
Suryavanshi, in his debut season in the Indian Premier League, had already proven his talent. He had scored 252 runs in seven matches, including a century, making him the youngest player to achieve a century in men's Twenty20 cricket.
The young prodigy further enhanced his reputation by utilizing his IPL experience. He hit three fours and five sixes at Hove, where India maintained a scoring rate of nearly 10 runs per over.
In the sixth over, Suryavanshi scored 21 runs off Jack Home, clearing the boundary three times. He then targeted James Minto, leading to both bowlers being removed from the attack.
Suryavanshi was eventually dismissed by spinner Ralphie Albert, caught at point. However, he had already set the stage for the successful chase, with Abhigyan Kundu contributing an unbeaten 45 runs to guide India to victory.
