Hamsters, despite their small size and undeniable cuteness, require significant care and attention, much like any other pet. Unfortunately, they are frequently neglected or abandoned by owners who lack a proper understanding of their needs.
The Hamster Society Singapore (HSS) volunteers are intimately familiar with this issue. This non-profit organization is spearheaded by a dedicated team of five women. The team includes President Cheryl, Vice-President Gladys Lam, and board members Chen Soong Fee, Kwa Li Ying, and Sim Jia Yi.
The team's diverse professional backgrounds, ranging from design to healthcare, contribute to their multifaceted approach to animal welfare, according to Sim. Lam, for example, is a professional race car driver. All members share a deep passion for hamsters and actively participate in fostering.
Chen highlighted that hamsters, despite their popularity as pets, are often misunderstood and overlooked within the broader animal welfare community. HSS was established in 2019, initially due to the absence of a dedicated rescue group for hamsters and the lack of education and proper standards for hamster care in Singapore.
Kwa emphasized that many people underestimate the level of care hamsters require, which often results in poor welfare. Through outreach programs and accessible resources, HSS aims to educate the public about proper hamster care and promote responsible pet ownership.

Why do we need a whole organization for hamsters? Can't people just take better care of their pets?

This article seems to exaggerate the care hamsters need. It's just a pet!

What a wonderful organization! It's essential that all pets get the care they deserve.

I fail to see why we should give so much attention to hamsters when there are bigger issues at play.

Why should we change societal perceptions of hamsters? They're just small rodents at the end of the day.
