A family-owned bakery in the Cornish coastal town of Looe faced a devastating blow when a long-trusted employee was discovered to have stolen a substantial amount of money over an extended period. Cathryn Horsfield, a 55-year-old resident of St Martin, admitted to theft by an employee at Truro Crown Court. The court handed down a two-year suspended prison sentence.
The thefts, which occurred between 2014 and 2022, totaled over £110,000 and nearly led to the closure of the beloved Looe Bakery. Horsfield, who served as the bakery's manager, was found to have repeatedly taken cash from the till, abusing the trust placed in her. The betrayal was uncovered when bakery owner Tonia Lewis noticed inconsistencies in the accounts and reviewed CCTV footage.
Recorder Malcolm Gibney condemned Horsfield's actions, describing them as a "glaring breach of trust." He noted that she had been "helping herself out of the till" for years and that the offense had become "too easy." The total amount stolen was confirmed to be £111,296. Horsfield has only repaid a small portion of the stolen funds and now works as a cleaner. A Proceeds of Crime hearing will be held. In addition to the suspended sentence, Horsfield, a grandmother with no prior convictions, was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.
Horsfield's defense lawyer stated that she was deeply ashamed and that her actions had ruined her life. The theft has had a significant emotional impact on the entire bakery team. Tristan Lewis, the owner’s brother, highlighted the lasting effects of the betrayal on the staff, who felt under scrutiny. He expressed the shock and disbelief at the actions of someone who had been a close family friend. Recorder Gibney emphasized the severity of Horsfield’s actions, pointing out that the theft was systematic, sustained, and selfish.

It doesn't condone her actions, but imagine the pressure she must have been under. I hope she can get help.

It's a good thing the court didn't send her to prison given that she is a grandmother.
