At Blackpool Zoo, zookeepers have faced the challenge of distinguishing between numerous penguin chicks in their Magellanic penguin colony, which is the only one of its kind in the UK. To address this issue, they've implemented a creative solution by applying blue nail varnish to the toes of one chick in each nest box, enabling them to accurately record each chick's weight and health as they grow.
Jason Keller, the senior keeper at the zoo, expressed excitement about the arrival of new chicks in Penguin Cove. With multiple chicks in some nests and similar markings among them, recognizing which chick is which became difficult. The painted nails not only help keepers but also enhance their ability to monitor the penguins' development as they prepare to explore their surroundings more independently.
As the chicks begin to venture out of their nests, zookeepers will analyze feather samples around twelve weeks old to determine their gender. After identification, they will receive names and ID bands. Meanwhile, both parents participate in nurturing their young by alternately feeding them regurgitated fish until the chicks can eat on their own.
In addition to caring for the penguins, Blackpool Zoo has recently expanded its facilities in 2024, introducing a sanded beach area and increasing the number of nest boxes from six to eleven. With a total of 23 Magellanic penguins, the zoo remains committed to their conservation despite the challenges faced by wild populations due to threats like oil pollution and climate change. Visitors to the zoo, which is part of the growing appeal of Blackpool, have risen, achieving a record 21.5 million tourists in 2023. This uptick follows significant investments in local attractions despite financial setbacks at other nearby resorts.

Painting penguin toes? Really? That sounds unnecessary and potentially harmful!
