China has made considerable progress in developing its product carbon footprint management system. By the end of 2024, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment reported that over 70 national standards had been issued or were in development. This information was released during a celebration of National Low-Carbon Day in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province.
The ministry's report also highlighted the unveiling of 100 industry-specific standards for accounting product carbon footprints. This signifies a concerted effort to provide detailed guidelines for various sectors.
In addition, China has implemented electricity carbon footprint factors tailored to its domestic circumstances. These factors are crucial for accurately assessing carbon dioxide emissions related to electricity production and consumption.
According to Pei Xiaofei, a ministry spokesman, these standards and factors are vital in addressing the pressing need for carbon footprint accounting across diverse industries. He emphasized that the report represents the ministry's first comprehensive overview of the advancements in building the product carbon footprint management system.
