The west-to-east gas transmission project in China has taken another step forward with the commencement of operations for a crucial segment. This development is designed to improve the distribution of gas resources across the country and strengthen energy security.
The Gansu-Ningxia section of the pipeline, which stretches from Turpan in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region to Zhongwei in Ningxia Hui autonomous region, officially began operations on Thursday. This new section is expected to substantially increase the capacity for natural gas distribution across different regions.
The pipeline from Turpan to Zhongwei is projected to transport 15 billion cubic meters of natural gas each year. This volume of gas is equivalent to the energy generated by over 27 million tonnes of standard coal. Consequently, the project is anticipated to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 50 million tonnes annually.
The Turpan-Zhongwei section is a component of China's fourth west-to-east gas transmission pipeline. The overall west-to-east gas transmission project, encompassing this and three other pipelines, is designed to optimize the allocation of energy resources within China. The project aims to transport plentiful energy resources from the western production areas to the high-demand markets in the eastern regions.
