A tragic incident in Gary, Indiana, resulted in the deaths of five individuals. The collision involved a train and a vehicle, occurring late Wednesday night.
The accident occurred near Miller Station. South Shore Line eastbound train 133 was stopped shortly after the crash, which happened around 11:10 p.m.
The train, carrying 32 passengers, was approaching the intersection of US 12 and 7th Street. A vehicle, occupied by five people and traveling south on 7th Street, bypassed the crossing gates and entered the train's path.
The Gary Police Department confirmed that all five occupants of the vehicle perished in the collision. The identities of the victims were not released as of Thursday. Fortunately, the passengers and crew on the train were unharmed.
South Shore Line President Mike Noland expressed condolences, acknowledging the loss of life and emphasizing the importance of caution around trains and tracks. Traffic in the area was disrupted while emergency crews managed the scene.
