Coach Steals £6,000 from Under-10s Soccer Team for Gambling

Michael Grisedale, a coach for the Vauxhall Astra under-10s soccer team in Ellesmere Port, has narrowly escaped imprisonment after misusing more than £6,000 contributed by parents for a prestigious football tournament in Barcelona. Tasked with managing the funds for the trip, Grisedale chose instead to gamble the money away at virtual casinos, leading to the cancellation of the team’s hotel booking.

When hotel staff reached out to a parent due to unpaid fees, the team learned about Grisedale's betrayal. Despite the financial mismanagement, the children ultimately managed to travel to Salou thanks to crowdfunding efforts from the community. Grisedale, who faced the court on multiple theft charges, received a 24-month suspended sentence, was ordered to perform 150 hours of community service, and must repay the stolen funds. The judge emphasized the deep trust placed in him by the parents and the emotional impact on the children, who were excited about the trip that was marred by Grisedale's actions.

Prosecution details revealed that Grisedale was solely responsible for the organization of the trip and had initially agreed to handle the finances. However, with the travel costs nearing $6,400, he became anxious about insufficient funds and resorted to online gambling in a misguided attempt to recover the money. His actions led to significant distress among the families who had worked hard to fundraise for the tournament.

When Grisedale was eventually tracked down by his girlfriend, he expressed remorse and acknowledged his mistakes. He was arrested shortly thereafter, leading to an admission of his wrongdoings. Although he had attempted to repay some of the stolen money, the emotional fallout has significantly impacted the children and the team, which has since been disbanded. Parents expressed feelings of shock and betrayal, underlining the severe repercussions of Grisedale's choices on both the team and the community.

Grisedale's defense attorney noted his client's drastic decline in circumstances, stating that the theft was motivated not by a desire for an extravagant lifestyle but rather from financial desperation. The attorney explained that Grisedale's intention was to repay the funds, revealing the complexities of his gambling addiction that ultimately led to a series of poor decisions.

He gambled with their dreams and the community's hard work. Pure selfishness.

Nobody ever wants to make mistakes like that. The road to recovery is long, but it is possible.

Gambling addiction is a serious issue, but it doesn't excuse theft. He needs to be held fully responsible.

The fact it took his girlfriend to track him down speaks volumes. He clearly wasn't taking this seriously.
