China's Electronic Warfare Aircraft Bolstering PLA Air Force Capabilities

An H-6K bomber, accompanied by a J-16D electronic warfare aircraft and a J-16 multirole heavy fighter jet, participated in drills that concluded on April 10, 2023.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force views the domestically developed J-16D electronic warfare aircraft as "irreplaceable," according to a recent statement by a leading designer. Wang Yongqing, chief expert from the Shenyang Aircraft Design and Research Institute, highlighted the aircraft's significance. The J-16D is a specialized electronic warfare variant derived from a fighter jet platform. Military assessments cited by Wang emphasize its crucial role within the PLA Air Force.

The J-16D was first showcased at the Airshow China 2021 in Zhuhai. The aircraft displayed four jamming pods under its wings and air inlets, along with two missiles beneath its fuselage, in addition to electronic warfare pods on the wingtips. The aircraft integrates reconnaissance, offensive, and defensive capabilities, designed to counter advanced air defense systems. Its purpose is to enhance the PLA Air Force's electronic attack capabilities and overall combat effectiveness.

Following the Airshow China, the J-16D commenced combat exercises. Reports indicated that the J-16D and the J-20 stealth fighter can operate together, forming a comprehensive aviation electronic warfare system. The J-16D can fly in formation with other fighter jets, conducting electronic suppression and deception missions, and launching missiles to destroy enemy radar installations. It can also enhance the stealth capabilities of other aircraft by jamming enemy radar. The importance of the J-16D is further underscored by the expectation that future warfare will occur in highly contested electronic environments.
