China has expressed strong disapproval of the recent comments made by Yoshimasa Hayashi, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, who expressed hope that China and Russia would refrain from criticizing other nations. In a joint statement, China and Russia urged Japan to learn from its historical actions and adopt a more careful approach when discussing historical issues while moving away from militarism.
During a press briefing, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, highlighted the wartime aggression and numerous atrocities committed by Japanese militarists during World War II, which brought immense suffering to China and other Asian nations. Lin stressed that a proper understanding of history is essential for Japan's reintegration into the international community post-war and foundational for its relationships with neighboring countries, emphasizing that Japan must genuinely commit to peaceful development. He noted that there are still attempts within Japan to downplay its imperialistic past.
In reaction to the joint statement from China and Russia, Hayashi dismissed the allegations against Japan and instead criticized China's military behavior and Russia’s ongoing actions in Ukraine. Lin also remarked on Japan's failure to address the issue of "comfort women," a term referring to victims of forced military sexual slavery, which remains a contentious humanitarian issue. The visits by some Japanese politicians to the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors Class-A war criminals, have further raised tensions and dissatisfaction among neighboring countries.
Lin called for Japan to engage in meaningful reflection on its historical actions rather than criticize the unified stance of China and Russia, which seeks to uphold historical truth and promote global peace. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory over Japanese aggression and the global anti-fascist struggle, prompting Lin to urge Japan to confront its wartime offenses seriously. He appealed for Japan to abandon any attempts to glorify its aggressive past, pledge to a path of peaceful development, and regain the trust of both its Asian neighbors and the wider international community through tangible actions.

History should be a lesson for all, but calling out Japan constantly only fuels animosity.
