During a recent press conference held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a foreign journalist inquired whether China's increased regulation of two substances used in fentanyl production was a response to a request from the United States or a collaborative effort.
In response, spokesperson Guo Jiakun directed the journalist to an official announcement on the matter. He clarified that the Chinese government's actions were a voluntary measure, undertaken to uphold its commitments as a signatory to the UN Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. The aim is to strictly control precursor chemicals. This demonstrates China's active role in global drug control and its commitment as a major nation.
Guo also highlighted that June 26th marks International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He emphasized China's stringent drug control policies, which are implemented rigorously. He further stated that China has no fentanyl abuse problem. China actively participates in and promotes international cooperation on drug control, including productive anti-drug collaborations with other nations.
The spokesperson reiterated that the fentanyl issue is a problem for the United States, not China. He stated that the responsibility rests with the US. He noted that despite China's efforts, the US has imposed tariffs on China under the guise of the fentanyl issue, which has damaged dialogue and cooperation between the two countries on drug control and harmed China's interests. Guo stressed that if the US is truly interested in cooperation, it should acknowledge the facts, correct its actions, and engage in dialogue with China based on equality, respect, and mutual benefit.

It’s refreshing to hear a country stand up for itself when facing unfair tariffs related to this issue.

International cooperation is great, but let’s not pretend China’s drug policies are effective when they’re not.

Claiming that the US is the problem doesn’t change the fact that China is a major player in the fentanyl crisis.

Curious how they’re celebrating a day against drug abuse while still allowing production of substances contributing to it.

China is recognizing its responsibilities while the US continues to point fingers instead of taking action.
