Rising Stars and Record Attendance in the Chinese Super League

The Chinese Super League (CSL) is set to continue this week, picking back up after a lengthy international hiatus during which the national team fell short in its quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Although this setback may dampen excitement for local football, the emergence of promising young players has stirred enthusiasm, with many seen as the future prospects for the nation. One notable player is 18-year-old forward Wang Yudong from Zhejiang FC, who has garnered attention for his standout performances, including a decisive penalty goal that helped China secure a 1-0 win against Bahrain during the qualifiers.

Wang's recent success sees him leading the CSL as the top scorer, having netted eight goals in just 12 matches, and he has received praise from rival fans for his efforts, particularly during his two-goal outing against Shandong Taishan. Jian Xuejie, a representative for the Chinese Professional Football League (CPFL), noted an encouraging rise in playing time and game appearances among young players across various leagues, reflecting a positive trend for youth in football. With ten under-21 players scoring in the current season, the potential for local clubs to cultivate talent seems promising.

In an unexpected turn, Dalian Yingbo, a relatively new participant in the CSL, has recorded the highest attendance this season, despite currently ranking 10th in the league standings. Their match against Beijing Guoan saw a remarkable turnout of 61,185 fans, marking the second-highest attendance in CSL history. Jian reported that the overall attendance for the season has seen a remarkable increase, jumping 21.69% from the previous year, with an average of just over 24,000 spectators per match—a possible indication of the league’s growing appeal.

Despite this success, the CSL faces competition from the growing popularity of amateur football leagues in the region, which may threaten future attendance figures. Historically, some CSL teams encountered financial difficulties after investing heavily in foreign players, leading to disbandment, such as in the case of Jiangsu FC, which dissolved shortly after winning the league title in 2020. In response to these challenges, CPFL has initiated efforts to bolster club sustainability by collaborating with European football experts.

Experts like Peter Leible from the German Football League emphasize the importance of a solid regulatory framework to ensure clubs' financial viability. The DFL’s successful model, which includes a stringent licensing system, helps clubs maintain a balanced financial approach while achieving sustainable growth. La Liga President Javier Tebas echoed similar sentiments, recognizing the untapped potential within Chinese football. Meanwhile, Li Kemin, chairperson of CPFL, underscored the significance of ongoing reforms and innovations to nurture professional football in China, making strides toward a healthier club atmosphere.

The CSL’s issues run deep, and no amount of optimistic talking will fix it.

What does it matter if one team has high attendance? The league still lacks overall competitiveness.

Just because attendance is up now doesn't mean it will last. The CSL has had its fair share of letdowns.
