Chinese Aircraft Carrier Liaoning Expels Foreign Fighters During Patrol in Western Pacific

On Sunday, Chinese official media shared footage of J-15 fighter jets taking off from the Liaoning aircraft carrier, which is part of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy. This occurred in an undisclosed location in the Western Pacific, where the Chinese navy aimed to counter foreign aircraft they believed were executing mock attack drills on their carrier group. According to the reports, the Liaoning's command center identified four foreign fighter jets closing in on their position, suggesting they were simulating an attack, although specifics about the timing and origin of these foreign aircraft were not disclosed.

Despite the adverse weather, with heavy rainfall and turbulent conditions that limited visibility and posed challenges for flight operations, the J-15 fighter jets were scrambled from the carrier in response to the foreign threat, armed with live missiles. The jets successfully carried out tactical maneuvers and expelled the approaching foreign aircraft, showcasing the crew’s skill and combat readiness. Military expert Song Zhongping emphasized that the Liaoning has every right to defend itself from nearby foreign military aircraft.
