The Home Office has reported that over a thousand migrants arrived in the UK within a two-day period after crossing the English Channel in small boats. Official figures indicate that 437 individuals made the journey on Friday, June 20th, across seven boats. On Saturday, an additional 583 people arrived, traveling in eight boats, bringing the total for the two days to 1,020.
This recent influx brings the total number of arrivals this week to 2,083. The cumulative total for the year has now reached 18,400. This represents a significant increase compared to previous years, with 12,644 arrivals by the same date in 2024, 10,601 in 2023, and 11,739 in 2022.
The news of the increased arrivals comes amidst reports of stricter measures being implemented by French authorities on their beaches. Additionally, political figures have addressed the situation. Sir Keir Starmer described the situation as "deteriorating" and suggested potential visa restrictions. The Prime Minister also indicated that countries failing to adequately address irregular migration, such as by accepting the return of failed asylum seekers, could face consequences regarding visa issuance.
French police have been observed employing more assertive tactics on the beaches, including the use of tear gas. However, there have also been instances where they have been seen observing as migrants entered the water to board dinghies, seemingly allowing them to proceed with their attempts to cross the English Channel.

It's heartbreaking to see people risking their lives like this. We should provide safe passage.

Another day, another thousand. This isn't a crisis; it's an invasion.
