The alarming rise in sea levels has evolved from a distant worry to an urgent reality, particularly for coastal communities such as Eastbourne. Experts have determined that by the century's end, the town could experience a sea level rise between 11 and 43 inches, with specific neighborhoods like Roselands, Bridgemere, Seaside, Langney, and Sovereign Harbour being at the highest risk. These vulnerable areas house nearly half of Eastbourne's population of about 100,000, placing many residents in danger of flooding. Research conducted by the journal, Oceans and Coastal Management, underscored that Eastbourne ranks third in England for properties likely to be lost to rising tides by the year 2050.
By the mid-2050s, it's projected that between 120,000 and 160,000 properties along the English coastline may need to be relocated due to sea level threats, in addition to the 30,000 to 35,000 existing properties already deemed at risk. To address these dangers, initiatives spearheaded by Susan Kerrison of the Eastbourne Green Party include the Pevensey Bay to Cooden Coastal Management Scheme and Blue Heart. The Coastal Management Scheme aims to strengthen Eastbourne's main defense, a shingle beach, through techniques that involve modeling and replenishing shingle movement. Meanwhile, Blue Heart is focused on creating a comprehensive water management system that leverages sensor data to better predict and manage flooding triggered by rainfall, river overflow, groundwater, and wastewater.
Eastbourne is not an isolated case, as numerous seaside towns throughout England and Wales share similar vulnerabilities. Experts from Climate Central have indicated that additional coastal areas like Morecambe, Weston-super-Mare, Hythe, Dover, and Great Yarmouth could also find themselves underwater by 2050 if current trends in sea level rise persist. Major cities like London are also at risk, with flooding projections that could impact areas extending along the Thames as far as Surbiton and affecting significant locations such as Canary Wharf, Greenwich, and Westminster.

This is just another scare tactic. Climate change isn’t as dire as they make it out to be!

The statistics are alarming, but they also provide a call to action. We need to stand together against climate change.

This report is biased. It’s designed to create panic rather than offer real solutions.
