A hot air balloon caught fire in Santa Catarina, Brazil, on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals. The balloon plummeted from the sky, with footage showing it engulfed in flames as it descended in the municipality of Praia Grande.
Thirteen people survived the incident and were transported to hospitals. Reports indicated that a total of 21 people, including the pilot, were on board. The fire originated in the basket, prompting the pilot to attempt a landing.
According to authorities, the pilot and thirteen others managed to escape the balloon. Sadly, eight individuals were unable to do so. Four of the victims were found charred, while the remaining four jumped from the balloon during its descent.
The governor of Santa Catarina expressed his condolences and stated that authorities were working to provide assistance to the injured and support the families affected by the tragedy. The President of Brazil also offered his solidarity and support.
The company responsible for the balloon stated that it adhered to all regulations and had a clean safety record prior to the incident. They have suspended all operations indefinitely. Praia Grande is a popular location for hot air ballooning, known for its scenic canyon landscapes.
This incident follows a recent fatal hot air balloon crash in Sao Paulo state, and is part of a series of fatal hot air balloon accidents in recent years. Similar incidents have occurred in Arizona, Australia, Mexico, and New Mexico.
