In a vibrant display of sportsmanship and cultural exchange, more than 3,000 participants from both China and various international locations convened in Chongzuo City, located in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, for the China-Vietnam Detian Transnational Waterfall Cross-Border Run. This event served as Guangxi's first cross-border marathon and was held within China’s premier internationally recognized tourism cooperation area.
The half marathon course meandered through some of the most picturesque scenery, beginning at the Shuolong Border Port and leading runners past the stunning Detian Transnational Waterfall Scenic Area. The route culminated within the designated cooperation zone, allowing athletes to experience breathtaking views that stretched along the 43-kilometer border shared by China and Vietnam.
Notably, the competition saw Kenyan athletes take home both top honors, with Eyanae Paul winning the men's division and Kuria Mary Wangari claiming victory in the women's event. Event organizers highlighted the significance of the marathon not only as a competitive sports occasion but also as an important cultural connector, reinforcing ties between communities. Since its establishment in October 2024, the cooperation zone has welcomed over 30,000 visitors and has been instrumental in promoting cross-border folk festivals, traditional music, and conservation initiatives.

What does 'premier internationally recognized tourism cooperation area' even mean? Marketing jargon, maybe?

Detian Waterfall is beautiful, but is it really a good idea to have thousands of people running through it? Potential for damage to natural habitats feels high.

I'm all for cultural events, but is there an inherent risk of amplifying commercialization of indigenous communities?
