The inaugural China-Central Asia cultural tourism train recently completed its first round trip, connecting Xi'an, China, with Almaty, Kazakhstan. This marks the establishment of a new avenue for enhanced connectivity and cultural exchange between China and Central Asia.
The tourist train, designated Y29, embarked from Xi'an with over 200 passengers. The journey culminated in Almaty after a three-day trip. The return journey to Xi'an concluded a 3,600-kilometer voyage, fostering cultural understanding along the Silk Road.
The train operates under a segmented transportation model, with Chinese and Kazakh railway authorities managing the domestic and international sections, respectively. This collaboration ensures seamless customs clearance for passengers. The train's design incorporates elements from both countries, including iconic landmarks, bringing the spirit of the ancient Silk Road to life.
Throughout the journey, cultural events were held daily, including traditional Chinese medicine demonstrations, cultural lectures, hands-on heritage experiences, and live performances. These activities facilitated interaction between passengers from different countries.
The launch of the train is seen as an example of how railways can facilitate people-to-people exchanges under the Belt and Road Initiative. The aim is to create an immersive environment, transforming the train into a cultural ambassador and strengthening bonds between China and Central Asian countries.
A welcoming ceremony and cultural exchange activities were held in Almaty. Local residents greeted Chinese passengers with music and dance. Demonstrations of Chinese intangible cultural heritage captivated the citizens of Almaty. Visitors experienced various art forms, including painted masks, inside painting, paper-cutting, woodblock prints, and ink painting.
Cultural and archaeological exchange events, including photo exhibitions and themed lectures, were also held during the journey, providing insights into the legacy of the Silk Road and the stories of mutual learning among civilizations.
The launch of the train is expected to boost cooperation between China and Kazakhstan, particularly as 2025 marks the China tourism year in Kazakhstan. The train is anticipated to promote tourism, drive consumption, and contribute to regional economic development, fostering integration in transportation, culture, and other fields between China and Central Asia.

When will we realize that not all interactions with China are favorable? We should stay independent.
