China's "Beautiful Life Survey" Highlights Consumer Trends and Model Cities

The data release event for the 2024-2025 "China Beautiful Life Survey" took place on Sunday in Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province. The event officially announced the model cities that represent a beautiful life as perceived by the public.

This year's model cities for beautiful consumption were Shenzhen, Chengdu, Wuhan, and Dalian. These cities were chosen due to their strong consumer vitality.

The expansion of consumption is a key focus. It is a top priority among the ten major tasks outlined in the 2025 Government Work Report during China's Two Sessions.

The survey revealed that tourism remains a primary consumption intention for Chinese people in 2025. Over one-third of respondents plan to increase their travel spending. Health and wellness, along with digital products, also ranked high on the list. Concerts, music festivals, and sports events are popular entertainment choices, driving cross-city spending. Both service-based and goods-based consumption are experiencing growth.

The "China Beautiful Life Survey" was first launched in 2006. It is a collaborative effort involving China Media Group, China's National Bureau of Statistics, China Post Group Corporation, and the National School of Development at Peking University. The survey has been conducted for 19 years.

How can cities be lauded for 'beautiful consumption' when many of their residents can't even afford basic needs?

Model cities for consumption? Sounds more like a marketing trick than a meaningful measure of quality of life.
