Zheng Qinwen, seeded eighth, secured a place in the French Open quarterfinals after a challenging three-set match against Liudmila Samsonova, the 19th seed from Russia. The match concluded on Sunday.
The Olympic gold medalist extended her winning streak at Roland-Garros to ten matches, with a final score of 7-6(5), 1-6, and 6-3 on Court Suzanne Lenglen. Despite her Olympic victory at the same venue last summer, Zheng doesn't feel like a defending champion. She emphasized the difference between a Grand Slam, requiring seven matches, and the Olympic Games, which involves six matches to win a gold medal.
Zheng will now compete for her first Grand Slam title against Aryna Sabalenka, the world's top-ranked player. Sabalenka defeated Amanda Anisimova in a match that saw a close first set.
Sabalenka is looking forward to the match, stating she expects a great battle and is eager to get revenge after losing to Zheng in the Italian Open quarterfinals.
Iga Swiatek, the three-time defending champion, also advanced to the quarterfinals. She overcame a deficit of a set and a break to defeat Elena Rybakina in a match lasting two hours and 29 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier. Swiatek will now face Elina Svitolina for a spot in the semifinals. Swiatek aims to become the first woman to win four consecutive French Open titles since Suzanne Lenglen.
