On Thursday, a representative from the Chinese Ministry of National Defense expressed that the most destabilizing elements in the cross-Strait situation are the provocations from "Taiwan independence" advocates and interference from foreign nations. Spokesman Zhang Xiaogang indicated that the actions taken by Lai Ching-te, the leader of Taiwan, in pursuit of independence endanger stability and create uncertainty for the Taiwanese population.
Zhang issued a stern warning to the Democratic Progressive Party, suggesting that the "Taiwan independence" movement will not lead to positive outcomes. He asserted that the resolution concerning Taiwan is strictly a domestic issue for the Chinese populace, and there is no room for external influence.
He emphasized that China’s measures to protect its national sovereignty and territorial integrity are both legitimate and necessary. Zhang also urged the United States to refrain from contributing to the ongoing tensions regarding Taiwan, cautioning that such interventions could ultimately result in negative consequences. He concluded by stating that the People's Liberation Army will remain in a state of readiness to defend national sovereignty and integrity.

This isn't about "Taiwan independence," it's about China expanding its authoritarian reach.
