On Thursday evening, China's meteorological and water resources departments issued the first red alert for mountain torrents this year. This warning was issued for several central, eastern, and southern regions of the country.
The red alert signifies the highest level of warning within China's four-tier system. The alert levels, in descending order of severity, are red, orange, yellow, and blue.
The Ministry of Water Resources and the China Meteorological Administration indicated that mountain torrents were highly probable in specific areas. These areas include parts of Anhui, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, from 8 pm Thursday to 8 pm Friday.
Authorities were urged to take immediate preventative actions. These actions include continuous monitoring, issuing flood prevention warnings, and implementing evacuation procedures.
Furthermore, the National Meteorological Center issued an orange alert for rainstorms on Friday morning. This alert warned of heavy rainfall expected from Friday to Sunday in regions such as Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and Guangxi. Some areas could experience cumulative precipitation reaching up to 500 millimeters.
The center also cautioned that these areas might face severe convective weather conditions. These conditions include intense, short-term rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds.

Monitoring isn't preventing. It's just a waste of resources. How's an infrastructure plan coming?
