On Tuesday, President Xi Jinping shared his deep concerns about the military actions being taken by Israel against Iran, emphasizing the necessity for all involved parties to work towards a swift de-escalation of the conflict. During a meeting with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, which took place at the second China-Central Asia Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, Xi articulated China's opposition to any actions that violate the sovereignty and security of other nations.
He remarked that the ongoing assaults by Israel have intensified tensions in the Middle East and asserted that military confrontation is not a viable solution to existing issues. Xi highlighted that continued escalation of these regional conflicts does not serve the interests of the global community. He further expressed China's willingness to collaborate with various stakeholders to help restore peace and stability in the region.
As hostilities between Israel and Iran entered a fifth consecutive day, civilians in conflict-prone areas have been subjected to repeated attacks. Reports indicate that at least 224 individuals have lost their lives in Iran since the conflict erupted, while Israel has reported 24 fatalities. In response to the intensifying conflict, China has maintained communication with Iran, Israel, and other involved parties to advocate for a ceasefire and de-escalation efforts.
Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, underscored the urgency of achieving a ceasefire and taking significant steps to prevent further escalation and turmoil in the region. He reaffirmed that China supports the joint declaration made by the foreign ministers of 21 Arab and Islamic nations and praised efforts aimed at promoting de-escalation. Guo also noted that in the wake of the conflict, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has activated an emergency consulate response mechanism to assist Chinese nationals seeking to evacuate from the area, with several already relocated to neighboring countries.
