Jeremy McGovern's football journey began as a long shot. Drafted with pick 44 in the 2011 rookie draft, the odds of him playing 197 games, winning a premiership, and earning five All-Australian honors were slim. The then-Eagles recruitment boss admitted he initially considered McGovern due to his surname, taking a chance on the young player.
McGovern spent three years on the Eagles' rookie list without playing a game. In early 2014, at age 21, he faced a critical meeting with the new coach and club staff, fearing his career was over. He had returned from an off-season trip in less than ideal condition. The possibility of contract termination was discussed.
Despite not fitting the mold of the modern, ultra-fit athlete, McGovern possessed a unique skill set. After being sent to train independently, he regained his fitness and performed well for East Perth in the WAFL. He made his senior debut in round six against Carlton. Within two years, he was an All-Australian, the first of five such honors.
McGovern's exceptional ability to read the play and the flight of the ball was his greatest strength. He attributed this skill to his childhood experiences playing football with Indigenous children in Warburton, a remote community. He learned to mimic their natural football instincts, developing a keen sense of judgment. This skill became crucial in helping the Eagles defend and launch attacks for over a decade.
His impact on the game was significant, with the term "intercept mark" becoming synonymous with his name. He transformed defense into attack with his vision and strong hands. His performance in the 2018 grand final exemplified his brilliance. In the final minutes, he made a crucial mark, setting up a memorable moment.
Beyond his skill, McGovern was known for his courage. He played the grand final with multiple injuries, including torn oblique muscles and cracked ribs. Despite the pain, he showed his love for the game. His resilience became a familiar sight for West Australian football fans.
Following multiple concussions throughout his career, McGovern was advised to retire on medical grounds. The AFL's concussion panel's recommendation sealed his fate. With a long life ahead, he made the difficult decision to retire.
Jeremy McGovern joins the ranks of West Coast Eagles defensive legends. He is considered one of the all-time greats. His absence will be felt in WA football.
