During the AFLW off-season, Tilly Lucas-Rodd, a prominent player for Hawthorn, underwent top surgery, a procedure that involves the removal of breast tissue similar to a double mastectomy. Reflecting on their feelings after the surgery, Lucas-Rodd shared that rather than experiencing overwhelming emotions typically associated with such a life change, they felt a sense of alignment with their true self. "This is how I've always looked when I saw myself," they said, indicating that the surgery confirmed their internal vision of their body.

Prior to the procedure, Lucas-Rodd managed their gender dysphoria by using binders and tape to compress their chest during games, which caused discomfort and restricted their breathing. They mentioned that wearing larger guernseys was another way to conceal their body, highlighting the struggle of being visibly uncomfortable while playing on a national stage. Following the surgery, Lucas-Rodd is excited about participating in the upcoming season without the constraints of binders or uncomfortable sports bra, feeling freer than ever on the field.

As the first current AFLW player to undergo such a procedure, Lucas-Rodd's journey is important for visibility in sports.
