Minjee Lee showcased a strong performance at the PGA Championship in Texas, the third major of the year for women's golf. She navigated the challenging conditions, which included intense heat, to secure a promising start.
Lee's first round saw her card a score of three-under-par 69 at PGA Frisco. She attributed her success to her putting, highlighting the numerous birdie putts she made, as well as crucial par putts. While acknowledging the need to refine her driving, she expressed satisfaction with her overall game.
The Australian golfer found herself just one shot behind Jeeno Thitikul, the Thai superstar. She also held a one-shot lead over Yealimi Noh, Rio Takeda, Somi Lee, and Haeran Ryu, who were tied for third at two under. Lee had briefly reached five under, creating a two-stroke buffer, but dropped shots on the 16th and 18th holes.
Lee spoke about the demanding conditions, emphasizing the importance of hydration and seeking shade. She recognized that the heat affected the entire field. She focused on using her umbrella for shade and taking advantage of any wind to stay cool.
Other notable performances included Steph Kyriacou, who opened with an even-par 72, and Grace Kim, who was one shot further back. Nelly Korda, despite a neck injury, managed a first-round score of 72. Korda mentioned that her neck was improving daily, but that it was taking longer to recover than usual.

A leaderboard with close standings doesn’t guarantee success. She really needs to sharpen up her final holes.

Yes, she had a strong start, but dropping shots on crucial holes is a sign of nerves under pressure.
