A Wyoming-based artist is currently in custody following an incident that caused a disturbance at the National Speech and Debate Tournament finals in Iowa. The competition brings together high school and middle school students from across the country to participate in various contests.
The Des Moines Police Department reported that Jayden Roccaforte's actions raised safety concerns, leading to the immediate evacuation of the area. Video footage captured Roccaforte, 22, standing silently on stage. A student, upon noticing him, reacted with nervous laughter before urging the audience to leave. The event triggered unfounded rumors of a mass shooting.
Among those present was actor Josh Gad, who expressed strong disapproval of the disruption. Gad had been scheduled to appear at the finals. Gad, a former champion of the competition, shared his experience on social media.
A debate coach from Kansas, Edward Workman, stated that his students were deeply affected by the event. The police confirmed that no weapons were found and no injuries were reported.
The competition resumed an hour after the evacuation. The National Speech & Debate Association confirmed that the suspect was removed from the arena and that law enforcement had searched the venue. The organization emphasized that the incident was isolated. Roccaforte is being held at Polk County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct and drug possession.
