An aerial photograph, released by the Xinhua News Agency, depicts extensive flooding in Huaiji County, Guangdong Province, southern China, on June 19, 2025. The image shows towns submerged by floodwaters following several days of intense rainfall.
Rescue efforts were underway as workers utilized rubber dinghies to evacuate residents and provide essential supplies. The state broadcaster CCTV reported that approximately 30,000 individuals had been evacuated from Huaiji County.
The flooding caused significant disruption, with over half of the county's roads rendered impassable. Power and internet services were also widely disrupted. The Suijiang River overflowed its banks in an urban area, transforming streets into waterways. Aerial views revealed high-rise buildings and trees emerging from a vast expanse of muddy water, with water levels reaching halfway up the first floors of some structures and submerging vehicles.
Huaiji County is situated near the border with the Guangxi region and about 140 kilometers northwest of Guangzhou, the provincial capital. The heavy rainfall was attributed to tropical storm Wutip, which was followed by monsoon rains. Tragically, five fatalities occurred in Guangxi due to landslides triggered by the tropical storm.
A rescue worker, interviewed by the Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper, described the evacuation of seriously ill patients from a hospital. The team also provided essential supplies, including milk powder and water, to a mother with a newborn baby and was delivering aid to numerous children and elderly individuals at a school.
