India's newly appointed test captain, Shubman Gill, will be moving down the batting order to fill the number four position previously held by Virat Kohli. This announcement was made by vice-captain Rishabh Pant on Wednesday, just before the start of their series against England.
Kohli, who had a remarkable test career with 9,230 runs and 30 centuries, retired from the format last month, following the departure of former captain Rohit Sharma. In May, India had chosen Gill, a 25-year-old batsman, as their new test captain, opting for him over pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
Pant confirmed the batting order adjustments, stating that Gill would bat at number four, while he himself would remain at number five for the time being. He also mentioned that the team would continue to discuss the remaining lineup. He acknowledged the absence of key players but emphasized the opportunity to establish a new team culture or build upon the existing one.
Pant also highlighted the importance of his friendship with Gill in their leadership roles. He believes their strong relationship off the field will positively impact their performance on the field. He expressed confidence in their comfort level and the special bond they share, which he believes will be beneficial for the team. Their first major test as leaders will be the opening test match at Leeds, starting on Friday.
