Steven John Lam Kuet Keng, a director at Templars Law, has been charged with multiple offences in Singapore, including drink driving and careless driving, stemming from an incident that took place on April 7, 2024. He faces a total of five charges in the State Courts, after allegedly crashing his vehicle into guard railings while driving under the influence of alcohol. At approximately 12:25 am, it is reported that Lam had a breath alcohol level of 61 microgrammes per 100ml, exceeding the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.
During the incident on Bukit Panjang Road, Lam is accused of losing control of his vehicle, causing it to veer off course and collide with nine sections of guard railings. Due to this, he has been charged with driving without due care and attention. Records show that Lam has a prior history of traffic violations, including a drink driving conviction in 2006 and a speeding offence in 1999, which may classify him as a repeat offender.
Following the crash, Lam allegedly failed to notify the owner of the damaged government property, as required. Additionally, he is accused of providing misleading information to police officers, asserting that he was not the driver of the car and claiming an unknown individual was behind the wheel. His false claims continued even at the Traffic Police Headquarters when he repeated his denial of being the driver involved in the accident.
Lam has not entered a plea as of now, with his case scheduled to be reviewed again on July 17. Under the law, repeat offenders for drink driving can face fines ranging from S$5,000 to S$20,000 and potential imprisonment for up to two years. Penalties for careless driving can include a prison term of up to twelve months, along with fines. Additionally, giving false information to a public servant carries its own set of severe penalties, as does the neglect to inform about damaged property.
