Jassy also pointed out that generative AI is being integrated into Amazon's internal processes, such as optimizing inventory placement, enhancing demand forecasting, and improving the efficiency of robotics within the fulfillment network. These advancements are anticipated to lead to cost reductions and quicker delivery times. Currently, Amazon is developing more than 1,000 generative AI services and applications, with some already operational.
However, this technological shift raises concerns about the future of jobs at Amazon. Jassy acknowledged the reality that the rise of generative AI may result in fewer positions being needed in certain areas while increasing the demand for other types of roles. He indicated that while the long-term impact remains uncertain, there is an expectation of a decline in the corporate workforce as AI drives efficiency improvements.
Details about the potential scale of job losses remain vague, and Amazon has not provided specific figures regarding layoffs. Despite some fears, sources indicated to The Wall Street Journal that Amazon does not foresee immediate mass layoffs. The company previously underwent significant layoffs, affecting over 18,000 employees in recent years, targeting its devices sector, recruitment, and retail functions. As of last December, Amazon's workforce comprised more than 1.5 million full-time and part-time employees.
